Cornish College of the Arts’ Dance Department Presents Cornish Dance Theater: An Exploration of Movement and Energy
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Seattle, WA — October 25, 2024 – Cornish College of the Arts is proud to present Cornish Dance Theater, featuring Cornish Dance students under the guidance of Seattle dance visionaries Heather Kravas and Tonya Lockyer. This immersive production takes place at Cornish’s 9th Avenue Gallery, where students and audiences alike will experience groundbreaking explorations in movement and energy, crafted by these acclaimed artists in collaboration with emerging talent from Cornish’s Dance Department.
Throughout their residence at Cornish, Kravas and Lockyer are leading students through a creative process rooted in innovation and interconnectedness. Each piece brings a unique perspective, challenging and expanding the boundaries of dance and performance.
In Be Sides, Heather Kravas introduces two parallel yet separate dances, unfolding simultaneously in space and time. Kravas’s work invites performers and audiences to contemplate the interplay of improvisation and choreography, as shapes and ecstatic gestures—resembling unpredictable weather systems—ebb and flow across the stage. This dynamic juxtaposition of control and freedom provides a mesmerizing experience in observing and participating in evolving forms.
Tonya Lockyer’s performance, created with Cornish Dance students, centers on the concept of interconnectedness and the profound impact of small, incremental shifts. Influences from Beckett, Bruce Nauman, hip-hop, and performance dance underscore a layered piece that resonates with the history of dance and its ever-evolving nature. The energetic patterns in Lockyer’s work echo the past while weaving a tapestry of shared movement that is unmistakably modern.
