Interim Assistant Professor of Animation

Film and Media Department

The Film and Media Department of Cornish College of the Arts is accepting applications for a full-time Interim Assistant Professor of Animation. This a 1 year position, with the option of renewal for an additional year. This person will teach in innovative curricula in Animation, foster professional and community partnerships that advance department programs, facilitate collaboration across visual arts departments, and help to develop the Animation and Film and Media programs. Cornish offers majors in the performing arts (Theater, Dance, Music) as well as the visual arts (Animation, Art, Design, Film, Game Art, Interaction Design, Illustration).

This position involves the following responsibilities in the areas of teaching and service to the college:

Teaching

  • Teaches a full load according to the collective bargain agreement (typically three courses per semester, or the equivalent).
  • Teaches a variety of beginning and advanced undergraduate studio courses that may include Analog Animation, Digital Animation, Visual Storytelling, Time + Motion, Storyboarding, Motion Design, Concept Art, Experimental Animation, Thesis.
  • Instructs, manages, and supervises students in classrooms through demonstrations, discussions, visual aids, field trips, individualized instruction, lectures.
  • Plans, prepares, and follows an approved course of study based on program and course learning outcomes.
  • Works with the department to build curriculum.
  • Mentors Animation students and aids in the creation of career strategies
  • Assists department advisers, Chair, and other faculty in maintaining an exceptional program with a positive learning environment.  

Service

  • Participate in shared governance activities including college and department committees
  • Participates in Admissions recruitment events such as portfolio days, student registration, Open House, New Student Events, and assists with transcript/portfolio evaluation of transfer students
  • Works with Chair and Faculty in development of departmental policies, curriculum content, instructional standards, and evaluation methods
  • Contribute to the positive and inclusive culture of the program and college

Consideration for this position is contingent on the following requirements, with priority given to candidates who also have the preferred qualifications listed below:

Minimum Requirements

  • MFA or relevant terminal degree in animation or related area, or Bachelor degree and substantial teaching experience in animation.
  • Expertise in 2D animation workflows and methodologies
  • Experience in contemporary animation and visual effects production and technologies
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and mentorship
  • Willingness to participate in and lead course and curriculum development

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous teaching experience at a college level
  • Knowledge of 3D animation methods
  • Critical visual thinking and practices in both traditional and digital processes
  • Skills and experience in current animation and visual effects productions
  • Background in fundamentals of drawing, color, and composition
  • Record of screening, distribution, and/or exhibition of related media work
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary department similar to Film, Animation and Game Art

Job Type: Full-time
Compensation: $57,242 – $61,095
