Image + Sound: Making Scenes in Film
At this time, his intensive will be held online for summer 2021. Through a mix of synchronous and asynchronous learning, we are structuring our intensives to be creative, fun, and full of activities. If you have any questions about how we are moving to remote learning, please call or email with any questions.
Back to class safely – While we do hope to continue our in-person learning, please note that this learning experience may need to evolve to an online or hybrid learning platform based on the safety regulations and recommendations by the city and state.
Great filmmakers know that image and sound hold equal weight in good films. In this class, we will study how they come together to make scenes better in good films, and we will practice making scenes that hold more power because of this. Both a logical extension of Fade In and a stand-alone course, this class gives students ages 15-18 the opportunity to make one to two short films from scenes in teams.
Working with scripts provided (or written in Fade In), the class will teach the full range of cinema’s visual language, from composition to shots, and from the logic of visual narrative to working with actors, recording sound, and making a final edit. Much of our focus will be on the building block of the scene, on finding what is most real in it, and, through the frame, discovering what is powerful and effective in the film image.
The final day will culminate with a video showing of the students’ work in our Black Box theater space.
