Image + Sound: Making Scenes in Film
Great filmmakers know that image and sound hold equal weight in good films. In this class we will study how they come together to make scenes better in good films, and we will practice making scenes that hold more power because of this. Both a logical extension of Fade In and a stand-alone course, this class gives students ages 15-18 the opportunity to make one to two short films from scenes in teams.
Working with scripts provided (or written in Fade In), the class will teach the full range of cinema’s visual language, from composition to shots, and from the logic of visual narrative to working with actors, recording sound, and making a final edit. Much of our focus will be on the building block of the scene, on finding what is most real in it, and, through the frame, discovering what is powerful and effective in the film image.
The final day will culminate with a video showing of the students work in our Black Box theater space.
