Spring Events On Capitol Hill, In South Lake Union, And At Seattle Center

Forget the Seattle Squeeze! You can find Cornish events close to home wherever you live in the city. Cornish College of the Arts will produce more than one hundred events this spring, all easily accessible by transit, at its venues on Capitol Hill, in South Lake Union, and at the Seattle Center.

Some upcoming highlights of the Spring 2019 events include the return of Three Yells, led by Dance graduate Veronica Lee-Baik, to the Cornish Playhouse; the 15th Annual Cornish Student Drag Show; a series of concerts featuring Cornish’s renowned music faculty in February; the Washington State Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards; the spring musical Jesus Christ Superstar; Cornish Dance Theater; and the annual BFA show featuring graduating students from the Art, Design, Film, and Interior Architecture departments in April.

A Few Spring Events Happening At Cornish

Cornish Presents: Three Yells’ A Crack In The Noise

February 1 and February 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Cornish Playhouse, Seattle Center, 201 Mercer Street, Seattle

A new work by Dance graduate and project creator/choreographer Veronica Lee-Baik ‘98, this collaborative artwork strengthened by different genres addresses the humanitarian crisis of refugees and shows what can be accomplished when differences unite rather than divide. BFA Dance Concerts 2019

February 16 at 8:00 p.m. and February 17 at 5:00 p.m.
Cornish Playhouse, Seattle Center, 201 Mercer Street, Seattle

Cornish College of the Arts presents the 2019 BFA Dance Concerts, showcasing the choreography and performance work of Cornish Dance Department’s class of 2019. An eclectic array of dance styles and viewpoints will be represented. This concert will include performances of works commissioned from professional guest choreographers. Music Faculty Spotlight Weekend
February 22 and 23 at 8:00 p.m., and February 24 at 7:00 p.m.
PONCHO Hall at Kerry, 710 E Roy St, Seattle

Catch Kin of the Moon on February 22 featuring Cornish faculty members Kaley Lane Eaton, electronics and voice,Heather Bentley, viola, and Leanna Keith, flute. On February 23, join us for the Chuck Deardorf CD Release concert. Then, on February 24, Professor of Music Tom Baker and Professor of Art Robert Campbell present their multidisciplinary work “Manifold2” in an evening that also includes Peter Mack on the piano. Tickets available later in January through Brown Paper Tickets or at the door.

In Other Words: Celebrating Student Writing
March 6-25, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Main Campus Center, 2nd Floor, 1000 Lenora Street, Seattle

The Writing Across the Curriculum committee (WAC) will hold the opening reception on March 6 and later publish works online. Look for exhibits of student work at the Library, Writing Center, second floor display case, and adjacent hallway at Cornish’s Main Campus Center. For more information see cornish.edu/calendar.

Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards
March 13-15, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
March 16, Awards Ceremony, 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Main Campus Center, President’s Gallery, 1000 Lenora Street, Seattle

Since 2015, Cornish College of the Arts has hosted the Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards for Washington state. Winning artworks will be displayed on the 7th floor of the Main Campus Center in the President’s Gallery. The closing reception and awards ceremony will include readings from winning writing pieces on March 16.

A host of Cornish faculty and an alumni choir celebrate four decades of Roger Nelson teaching and performing at Cornish. Tickets available later in January through Brown Paper Tickets or at the door.

April 3-6 at 8:00 p.m. and April 6 at 2:00 p.m.

Directed by Billie Wildrick (5th Avenue Theatre’s Annie), the spring musical will mark the culmination of Cornish’s 100th year of presenting theater in Seattle. The production will be designed and performed by the students of Cornish College of the Arts. On display in the Cornish Playhouse gallery will be the Artists Up exhibit celebrating a century of theater in Seattle. Tickets available later in January through Brown Paper Tickets or at the door.

Cornish Dance Theater Spring 2019 Concert
April 19 at 8:00 p.m. and April 20 at 2:00 p.m. & 8:00 p.m.

Cornish Dance Theater, the performing ensemble of the Dance Department at Cornish College of the Arts, features choreography by faculty and guest choreographers Pat Hon, Laura Ann Smyth, Kate Wallich, and Deborah Wolf. Tickets available later in January through Brown Paper Tickets or at the door.

April 22-24, 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Multiple locations at Cornish College of the Arts

A festival of Music student work performed across the Cornish campus in South Lake Union and on Capitol Hill. Live performances will occur at both expected and unexpected places. BFA Exhibition 2019
April 26, Opening Reception, 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
April 27 – May 10
Multiple locations at Cornish College of the Arts’ South Lake Union campus

Annual exhibition featuring the work of graduating students in Art, Design, Film, and Interior Architecture. The graduates demonstrate their fluency with new work reflecting the themes and techniques of the contemporary visual landscape. Film screenings will take place Friday, April 26, Saturday April 27, and Sunday, April 28 only. See cornish.edu/bfa for more information. This event is free and open to the public.

15th Annual Cornish Student Drag Show
April 27 at 7:30 p.m.
Cornish Playhouse, Seattle Center, 201 Mercer Street, Seattle

A Community Support Resource Fair takes place in the Cornish Playhouse lobby starting at 6:30 p.m. followed by the annual show. Past participants include Cornish alum Jinkx Monsoon. Discover tomorrow’s drag stars today at this free event.

Contemporary Moves 2019
May 4 at 2:30 p.m. & 7:00 p.m. and May 5 at 2:30 p.m.
Eriksen Theater, 1524 Harvard Ave, Seattle

The Cornish Preparatory Dance Program’s annual spring concert offers intermediate and advanced students the opportunity to work with choreographers and perform a variety of dance styles. For more than 50 years, the Preparatory Dance program at Cornish has provided education for dancers ages 4 to 18 at Kerry Hall.
