Design and Production Portfolio Requirements
Applicants to the Design & Production specialization within the Theatre BFA are required to submit a portfolio and complete an interview with the Chair of Performance Production as part of the admission process. Your portfolio gives us the opportunity to learn about your creative process, technical skills and potential as a designer. If you are applying to the Theatre BA, a portfolio and interview are not required, and admission is based on the university’s standard application requirements.
Our portfolio process includes submitting a portfolio focusing on your interested concentration and an interview with the chair of Performance Production.
You will submit a portfolio for one of four concentrations:
- Costume Design
- Lighting Design
- Scene Design
- Sound Design
Costume Design
Please include 1-3 samples of work you’ve done with fabrics or clothing. This can include pattern work, completed garments, work in progress, or sketches and design drawings for costumes, street clothing, or accessories.
Lighting Design
Please include 1-3 samples of work you’ve done with lighting, either on stage or in other environments. This may include light plots, lighting paperwork like dimmer hook-up sheets or instrument schedules, and photos or slides of shows on which you’ve worked. Any other lighting or electric-related experience you may have should be communicated either by photos, written description, or drawing / sketching / drafting.
Scenic Design
Please include 1-3 samples of work you’ve done in scene painting or in designing scenery for productions (or for classroom projects). Work that shows your understanding of working with three-dimensional space is of special value.
Sound Design
Please include 1-3 samples of work you’ve done with sound design, music composition, audio production, or audio engineering. These can include audio or video recordings of performances, audio samples of sound & music cues or composition, examples of paperwork (sound plots, cue sheets, script notes, system diagrams/lists, music scores, etc.), and links to websites documenting your experience. Please also include a resumé or listing of experiences, along with info about audio equipment, software, and musical instruments that you have used significantly.
