History, Theory, & Research

History, Theory, & Research

  • Program Interior Achitecture

The Interior Architecture Department offers within each BFA Degree pathway 12 credits of history and theory courses, in which global histories are taught with a critical view of the conventional ways of teaching art and design histories that solely focused on the Western canon. We create course contents based on the literature that brings in the impact of colonialism in the non-Western world following Edward Said’s groundbreaking Orientalism, published in 1979. Based on these groundbreaking studies, we discuss not only the power relations between the East and the West on ethical grounds, but bring in racial relationships and inequity in historical context, working towards an antiracist teaching model. We use the latest research in the field of design history and utilize books and scholarly articles in shaping lectures and in-class discussions. Race and Modern Architecture: A Critical History From the Enlightenment to the Present published 2020, is one of our basic sources among others including, A Global History of Architecture, Global Design History.

Research is embedded not only in our history and theory courses but in studios as well. We integrate research, history, and theory in studio courses through lectures, discussions on assigned readings, and research on the built environment and communities. With an effort to uncover the role of underrepresented race and gender identities as well as non-Western cultures in the shaping of the built environment, we integrate sophisticated theoretical and historical sources.
