Beyond the classroom
Your experience at Cornish goes beyond the classroom, beyond studio work and onto the stage. The Cornish Theater Department presents public performances of between twelve and fifteen productions each year, in addition to over 30 developmental works, senior projects and special events.
In your freshman year, you can audition for senior projects and the student-run Original Works Festival. In your sophomore year, you will participate in an ensemble which will create an origianal show in the spring. In your junior and senior years, you perform in two to four full-length plays each year. Juniors also perform in an outdoor production of a Shakespearean play. In your senior year, create your own thesis production.
Every year, you may perform in cabarets, senior projects, the annual Original Works Festival, plus pieces produced by fellow students in the Playwriting and Directing Courses.
Studios and Stages
Theater classes take place in the recently renovated studio classrooms in the Main Campus Center (MCC), as well as at Freehold Theater Lab on Capitol Hill. Classrooms are spacious, with sprung wood floors and good acoustics. Productions are presented on campus in a black box studio theater in MCC, the larger flexible Ned and Kayla Skinner Theater in the Raisbeck Performance Hall, and the PONCHO Concert Hall/Theater in Kerry Hall. Off-Campus performance venues include the Broadway Performance Hall on Capitol Hill, Freehold, and local theaters such as ACT Theater and Seattle Repertory Theatre. Annual free Shakespeare productions are presented outdoors at the Seattle Center and Volunteer Park.
