Summer at Cornish: Theater Programs

The Summer at Cornish Theater program offers rigorous pre-college programs and a number of exciting studio experiences for students ages 14 to 18 who want to explore the theater in a professional art school setting.

You will hone your skills, learn new techniques from working artists, and meet other students passionate about theater. With a variety of scheduling options, Summer at Cornish provides a perfect platform to expand your knowledge, grow as an individual, develop strong audition pieces, earn college credit, and get a real taste of college life. Theater Sessions

You asked and we listened! Based on student and faculty feedback, we extended our Theater Pre-College Session from 3 weeks to 4 weeks, we added a Musical Theater Review 3 Week Intensive -- and you will earn college credit for both! We have also added new 1 and 2 week studio intensives.

Please note: College credit is not available for one or two-week intensives.

Pricing

Pricing for the sessions are noted below. You will receive a 10% discount, if you pay in full by May 6, 2016. Housing and scholarships are available for Theater’s Three and Four-Week Pre-College programs and the One and Two-Week Intensive sessions.

Building a Production Pre-College Intensive

July 11 - July 22

The Summer at Cornish Building a Production Pre-College Intensive combines college-level coursework in Art, Design, Dance, Music, Film and Theater with practical production experience in a team environment. Departments (Art and Design, Dance, Music, Film and Theater) will admit 50 students total from the Seattle Public School District ages 14-18 through an approval process. 

The final production will be a free public benefit performance on Friday, July 22, 2016, at 7pm at The Cornish Playhouse, Seattle Center.

Pre-College Four Week Session

July 11 - August 5

This four-week, pre-college program prepares you in a comprehensive and rigorous fashion for the real challenges of art school and college life. Upon completion, you will earn two college credits. All students take Foundations & Scene Study, Perfecting the College Audition and Theater History.

If you are enrolled in the Pre-College Course Package, you must also take two afternoon elective courses which rotate Monday/Wednesday and Tuesday/Thursday. Elective Courses run from 1 to 4 PM and include topics such as directing, improvisation, stage makeup and writing.

At the conclusion of the program on August 5, 2016, you will participate in a final performance of your work.

Musical Theater Review Three Week Intensive

July 25 - August 12

The Musical Theater Review Three Week Intensive combines college ­level Theater, Music, Dance and Performance Production discipline based work with practical production experience in a team environment. Located at the Cornish Playhouse, Seattle Center, the program allows students ages 14-­18 to take on the roles of designers, choreographers, dancers, directors, composers and actors, learning what it takes to be successful producers while working together to bring their creative vision to life. Upon completion, you will earn two college credits.

The final production will be a free public benefit performance on Friday, August 12, 2016, at 7:30pm at The Cornish Playhouse, Seattle Center.

Screenwriting and Producing for Film Two Week Intensive

August 1 - August 12

In this intensive workshop actors will be given the opportunity to collaborate with each other to create their own characters, write a script as an ensemble, shoot, edit and present their work.  In addition to crafting a new script, students will also receive direct feedback from instructors during the entire process. This course covers all of the essential components of creating a short film, from character creation to editing.

One-Week Theater Intensive

August 8 - August 12

Our one-week intensives are designed for the student who wants to dig deeper into a particular art form. Intensives run Monday – Friday, 9 AM – 4 PM, with a one-hour break for lunch. Intensives provide 30 contact hours over five days with our stellar faculty, during which you will explore the depth and breadth of the art of theater. 

These courses make a welcome week-long addendum to the four week pre-college program or may be taken on their own. All levels are welcome.
