Cornish College of the Arts, in conjunction with professional ensemble-in-residence Gamelan Pacifica, offers an introductory class in Javanese gamelan.

Gamelan is an orchestra of gong-chime percussion instruments from Indonesia. This class will introduce the student to the basic performance practices of Central Javanese gamelan music through the process of learning actual pieces from the Central Javanese gamelan repertoire. Background information on the cultural context and origins of the music will also be discussed.

The class provides access to a rich and accessible ensemble tradition that is both dynamic and contemplative, while providing a great means for musical development through hands-on exposure to a non-western musical tradition. The class is open to anyone ages high-school through adult. No previous musical experience is required.
