Creating Comics

Students create comics and learn basic skills including cartoon drawing, storytelling, drafting, lettering, and page design. At the conclusion of the course, students make a mini-comic book containing all the comics created in class.

Recommended (but not required) reading: Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud; Maus by Art Spiegelman; The Calvin and Hobbes Tenth Anniversary Book by Bill Watterson. All books are available in the Cornish College of the Arts library.

Drawing form Observation

Exploring object-based installations, nature, people (figures/portraits), and the individual imagination, students will experiment with a wide range of media and approaches. Drawings will address design elements (including line, shape, value, color, and texture) as well as the principles of compo- sition and perspective. In this course, students will be challenged to develop work in projects adapted to skills and materials. Classes will offer individual instruction as well as collaborative projects.


Intro to Encaustic Painting

This course will explore the historical and contemporary uses of encaustics in conjunction with the studio procedures and experimentation. Students will be introduced to the methodologies of hot wax painting; from tools and safety, substrates and grounds to mediums and surface techniques.

Fast, Cheap, Out of Control
Intro to Printmaking

This is a chance to explore a medium that artists from Rembrandt to Warhol have used to get work out into the world. This workshop is a chance for students to try both eastern and western printmaking traditions. In this introductory class we will be learning printing techniques for both wood block and copper intaglio printing. Students will also be given the opportunity to develop experimental techniques of their own.


Jedi Fight: Live Action and Video Effects

Create a light saber and force battle fight sequence using a mixture of live action and post video effects. Student will learn the basic principles of green screening - the same technique that allows TV weathermen to float above maps of the USA on the evening news. Green screening is by far the most important element of film special effects. It is simple to learn and has a high 'WOW' factor.

Life Drawing

Work with nude and clothed live models to explore the figure through a broad range of poses and environments. Discussions on the elements of composition (line, form, texture, color, and value) will continually inform the process and drawings. This course offers individual and group instruction and is ideal for students familiar with the model as well as beginners who are just approaching figure drawing for the first time.


Mixed Media Painting

A studio exploration of painting and mixed media to facilitate a variety of choices in the creation of painted images. Surface choices will include two-dimensional, relief, and three-dimensional objects. Techniques and materials from which to choose will also include mediums, gels, transfers, adhesives, additives, crafted and found surfaces, various paint application tools, and assemblage, as well as unique missed media you bring to class.

Photo I

In this introductory class students will build pinhole cameras demonstrating the very basics of camera operation sand working with light sensitive materials. Students will transfer this knowledge to 35mm manual cameras and learn how to correctly expose black and white film to make contact sheets and basic enlargements in the darkroom. A final exhibition on the last day of class will allow students to learn how to prepare their prints for display.

Expanding upon the basics learned in Photo I, students will discover creative 35mm camera techniques and well as perfecting print skills in the darkroom by the use of contrast filters, burning and dodging. Students will explore alternative print techniques such as solarization, hand coloring, toning and multiple exposures. A final exhibition on the last day of class will allow students to learn how to prepare prints for display by cutting window mats.

The Printed Poster

This class introduced the history of the broadside - or poster - as a powerful medium for visual communication. Combining text and image to create an edition of a unique poster, students will learn both the history and craft of relief printmaking and letterpress. Images will be made from linoleum blocks and printed in the Book Arts studio using a flatbed press. Students learn the basics of typesetting and each student will create an edition of no les that fifteen posters (eight to exchange with classmates, seven to take home). The class will culminate in a print exchange so students leave with a group portfolio of posters.


Simple 2D Animation

This class is an introduction to animation using pen and paper cut outs. Once created, we'll scan the cut outs into Photoshop and then perform the final animation in Flash or Aftereffects. With the flexibility of pen and paper cut outs, our stories will be limited only by our imaginations.


Simple 3D Animation

This class is an introduction to animation using 3-dimensional models. We'll develop stories, create story boards and then use stop/step animation and fully articulated, rigged out skeletons that are ready to spring to life. In our exploration of animating a 3D model, we'll cover the basic techniques of creating simple actions like walking, falling, and picking up heavy objects.
