The Pacific Northwest provides a dramatic background for daily classes in our beautiful, historic Capitol Hill campus. Summer at Cornish’s Dance program has a long, reputable history, and integrates current and guest faculty in a classical ballet and modern dance curriculum. Dancers will experience demanding classes that stress technique, artistry, composition, and respect for the health of the whole dancer.
Classes span ages 4 to 18 years. Choose the program that is right for you. We offer three week residential summer dance intensives for dancers pursuing a professional career or a degree in dance, and one to two week intensives at the intermediate and beginning levels. Community drop-in classes are offered throughout the summer. Some courses require an audition. We offer two on-campus auditions and accept auditions online. Courses vary in price from $165 to $1400. If tuition is paid in full by May 3, 2013, a 10% discount is available. Discount is not applicable for drop in community classes. Pre-College Intensives
Ages 13 – 18 years
The pre-college intensives are technique and composition based programs which include classical ballet, pointe, modern, composition, jazz, improvisation, Pilates and character dance. The daily format offers intense training for dancers who want to gain strength, improve technique and acquire the knowledge of a new discipline. Dancers are placed in morning technique classes by technical skill and afternoon classes by age. Students ages 16 to 18 are tracked in our Dance College Preparation Intensive which will also include essay writing for college admissions, basic anatomy, college options for dancers, development of artistry, improvisation and the creation of a solo. Students earn two credits upon successful completion of the Dance College Preparation Intensive.
Teen Intensive dancers 13 to 15 will take afternoon classes in ballet vocabulary, music for dancers, basic anatomy, improvisation and composition. Our experienced faculty nurtures the whole dancer in a healthy, encouraging environment. Musical Theater Intensives are also offered for students that would like to gain advanced ability in dance, vocal and acting skills. All classes will be held at our historic Kerry Hall campus in spacious, sky lit studios. Our program is attended by national and international students. Scholarships and Housing are offered for students ages 15 to 18 years old.
Young Adult Intensives
Ages 11 – 12 years
These intensives focus on technique, strengthening and a clear understanding of dance alignment. In addition to technique classes, creative work is also introduced through composition and improvisation classes. Our faculty has a deep understanding of how to develop confidence and skill in aspiring young adults. Classes are offered at an intermediate level for 11 to 12 years. Intensive classes typically include: classical ballet, modern, composition, jazz, improvisation, character dance and hip hop. Afternoon seminars in ballet vocabulary, music for dancers and tap have also been included.
Cornish has a long-standing tradition in children’s dance programming. Our Preparatory Dance program has been part of dance at Cornish for over 50 years and offers classes throughout the academic school year. All summer dance classes will be held at our historic Kerry Hall campus in spacious, sky lit studios. It is recommended that students attending our Young Adults Intensives have studied 2 to 3 days a week for at least two years. Intermediate students can contact us with placement questions, or request a 15 minute placement audition. Placement classes are held at Cornish and are scheduled January through April.
Children’s Intensives
Ages 4 – 10 years
These one and two week intensives focus on technique, strengthening and a clear understanding of dance alignment. Creative work is also introduced through composition and improvisation classes. Our faculty has a deep understanding of how to develop confidence and skill in aspiring youth. Classes are offered at a beginning and intermediate level for 4 to 10 years.
Intensives typically include: classical ballet or creative movement, modern, composition, musical theater, improvisation, acting skills, and character dance. Cornish has a long-standing tradition in children’s dance programming. Community Drop-In Classes
Ages 13 +
No online registration available. Payment taken at the door for drop in classes. Cornish welcomes drop in students from the community or dancers visiting the Seattle area. Drop-in students are invited to attend technique classes in ballet, pointe and modern dance only.
Drop-in students do not register online but arrive early to purchase a class at the cashier located in Kerry Hall, Room 305 outside the dance studios. The cashier opens 30 minutes prior to the start of class. Payment may be made by cash, check or charge. All classes are $16. Current Cornish students majoring in Dance pay $10 per class. Students must be at the appropriate level. Faculty will assess drop-in students and may make placement recommendations. Please contact us with any placement questions.
