JoAnna Mendl Shaw

Choreographer JoAnna Mendl Shaw has been making site specific work for over twenty years. She taught on the Cornish faculty for ten years before moving to NYC in 1991 and one of her first large site projects was for Cornish Dance Theatre. Since 1998 Shaw has been exploring the kinetic dialogue between dancers and horses. Her company, The Equus Projects, is a company of professional dancers all trained in natural horsemanship. The recipient of two National Endowment for the Arts Choreographic Fellowships and numerous other grants, Shaw has choreographed for dance companies throughout the States and in Europe including commissioned works for Dancing in the Streets/NYC, SUNY Purchase, The Ailey School, Steps Out/Scottish Ballet and Ice Theatre of New York. Shaw currently teaches Composition on the faculty at The Juilliard School and teaches Improvisation, Composition and Choreography in the Ailey/Fordham BFA program.
