Course Description
The Rock Project: Being in a Band affords middle and high school students, ages 12-17, who have played guitar, bass, drums and/or keyboards for six months or longer an opportunity to go beyond the basics and learn what it takes to be in a band. Students will learn fundamental skills, with particular emphasis on original composition and songwriting instead of purely academic lessons. A number of guest artists will perform and share with the students their experiences as professional musicians. We will explore renowned guitar and bass player Carol Kaye’s methods for fusing jazz training into rock music. Ms. Kaye has recorded over 10,000 recordings and countless number one hits in the 60s and 70s including The Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations” and on Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” recordings. The workshop culminates with a Friday evening concert featuring performances by participants for supportive family and friends.
Who should enroll?
Middle and high school students, ages 12-17, who have played guitar, bass, drums and/or keyboards for six months or longer.
Daily Schedule
Monday through Friday, 10:00am to 4:30pm with a 30 minute break for lunch, and a concluding performance scheduled for Friday in PONCHO Concert Hall on the Cornish campus.

BC Campbell is a Seattle composer, songwriter and producer. He grew up playing jazz in big bands with old timers who played with Billy Holiday; spent years touring and recording as a songwriter and playing in bands; and currently, composes music for Film, Theater and Contemporary Dance.
His work has been presented at the Seattle International Film Festival, Big Sky Film Festival, The Smithsonian, Cornish College for the Arts, Velocity Dance Center, Intiman Theater, On The Boards and major Seattle music venues. He plays piano with Shannon Stephens (Asthmatic Kitty Records) and his orchestral score for the film Water Is Life (PBS) will be released in 2013. http://bccampbell.bandcamp.com/

Kathy Moore has performed in just about every type of venue, including the Triple Door, the Anacortes Jazz Festival, the Reverb Fest, Bite of Seattle, and Folk Life festivals. She’s been teaching guitar, piano, and voice privately and through organizations such as the Seattle Drum School and YATMA (Youth Advancement Through Music and Art) for over fifteen years.
Most recently her teenage students learned and performed Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” in its entirety. Kathy has studied piano with Michael Kelly from the Manhattan School of Music; and studied guitar with Frank Potenza (protégé of Joe Pass and current chair of the studio/jazz guitar faculty at the University of Southern California). In addition, Kathy is passionate about musicians’ health and teaches “Yoga for Musicians,” workshops for the relief of repetitive stress injuries specifically for musicians.
