Many elements work together to make a songwriter unique, among them the sound of the voice, the way instruments are played, the choice of subject and words, and the “interior sound-landscape” the songwriter creates. We will focus on all these elements with exercises in lyric writing, melody, chord progressions and rhythmic grooves. Special emphasis will be placed on how the voice and instrument work together, and how music theory can be used to create new sounds. We will also explore how to convey a story, how to use rhyme as an “engine”, and how to revise and edit. Group activities and exercises will alternate with individual work and one-on-one attention. The workshop culminates with a Saturday concert featuring performances by students sharing new work. Family and friends are encouraged to attend.
Who should enroll?
Students, ages 15-19, who want to learn to write songs or who are already active songwriters. Participants should have basic competency on a chordal instrument (guitar, piano, harp, etc), be comfortable singing and willing to share ideas vocally in a group setting. Some basic familiarity with music theory will be helpful.
Monday through Friday, 9:00 am - 4:00 pm with a break for lunch, and a concluding performance Saturday in PONCHO Concert Hall on the Cornish campus.
None. Open for enrollment to students, ages 15-19, without any audition.
