Robert Dick Flute Masterclass
Dates: July 12 – July 17
Meeting Times: M – S, 10:00am – 4:30pm
Instructor(s): Robert Dick, Paul Taub
This six-day workshop designed for intermediate and advanced-level high school, college, and young adult flutists offers an opportunity to work with and learn from Robert Dick, one of the most influential flutists in the world today, and the flutist who more than any other has reshaped the present and future of the flute. Joining Robert Dick for this workshop will be Paul Taub, Professor of Music at Cornish College of the Arts.
A daily masterclass each morning will be followed by afternoon coached ensembles ranging from duets to compositions for the entire class to an improvising ensemble. We will cover a wide variety of repertoire, but the emphasis will be on the music of Robert Dick and the major and emerging composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. We will explore techniques such as multiphonics, throat tuning, and circular breathing and how these techniques improve playing music of all styles. Improvisers are welcome! The week culminates in a Saturday evening concert for friends and family featuring all of the workshop participants. The class is designed for young flutists who wish to explore new repertoire and techniques in an environment that encourages spirited creativity. Students with a solid foundation on their instruments who are interested in exploring the sounds of today are encouraged to apply.
