Student Affairs
Cornish Housing Forum
Many of you will want or need to find a roommate so that you can share the costs of your apartment or house. Student Affairs does not match or screen potential roommates nor do we inspect or recommend specific housing. Therefore, you will need to be proactive in finding roomies and a place to live. The best place to start is to join the Student Forums on the Cornish website. You can then access and use the Cornish Roommate and Housing Forum.
The Cornish Roommate and Housing Forum allows members to post and read posts about roommate and housing options. In this way, students can share information in a timely manner and from different geographic areas. The Cornish Housing Forum is a restricted list, with membership available only to admitted or current Cornish College of the Arts students and the forum moderators. This has been done to protect your privacy. Of course, since this site is on the Internet, it is not completely secure. By restricting this Forum, we are making it as secure as possible.
Once you have joined it, you can fill out a Roommate Questionnaire, view other students' Roommate Questionnaires and view Off-campus Housing Postings. You can also view and reply to other students' posts and post messages yourself. By taking part in the Forum, you can find a potential roommate or roommates before arriving at Cornish College of the Arts for the Housing Workshops. This way you can focus your time and energy on finding an apartment or house during your visit to Seattle instead of trying to do everything at once. The Forum also has helpful tips regarding your roommate and housing search
Joining and using the Forum:
- Read or print out these instructions, then click on the link at the bottom of this page.
- After you have clicked on the link, look for "new user" and click on it.
- You are now at the registration page. Please print this page out before proceeding.
- Read the "Board Rules." You will need to agree to these terms before joining. Just click on the checkbox next to "I Agree" to do this.
- Now, fill out the form. As you fill out the form online, fill out the form you have printed. This way you will have a record of your login and display names, password and the email address you used when registering.
- Be sure to write the word "student" or "admit" in the box labeled "Your relationship with Cornish College."
- You can choose your own password or one will be randomly assigned to you.
- Click on the "Submit" button.
- You will then receive a confirmation email with the verification of your login name and password. This gives you limited access to some of the forums, but not the more private ones like the Cornish Roommate and Housing Forum.
- We check the information submitted against our student records before accepting the new user for the more private forums. This usually takes from 1-3 working days.
- After this time, you'll receive a Welcome Email. This will let you know which groups you belong to and remind you that you will need to go to the page and log in again to use the Forum.
- The 1st page you will see after logging in is your personal page. Look for the box that says "Main Configuration." You can set your profile, select personal preferences and subscribe to receive email from the different forums. You can also view any private messages sent to you from here. After you have set up this info, click on "Main Index to get to the forums."
- Now that you are a member, you will be able to access many of the different forums we have at Cornish. Feel free to explore all of them. Bear in mind when posting that some forums are public while others, like the Cornish Roommate and Housing Forum, are more restricted.
- On the Cornish Roommate and Housing Forum, start by reading the sticky notes. These are important messages which always stay at the top of the Forum. They include the Welcome Message for this Forum (read it - it's different than the general one you received when joining,) and Housing and Roommate Tips, which has helpful info as well as a link to the section of our website that has linkage to sites which can help you in your housing search, from neighborhood guides to classified ads to planning your visit to Seattle.
- You will want to fill out your Roommate Questionnaire so other students can know you're searching for a roomie and contact you. Then look at other students' questionnaires and read and reply to posts, as well as posting your own messages. You should also check out the Off-campus Housing Postings, some of which are submitted by Cornish students while others are from people in the community wanting to rent out a room or an apartment.
Good luck with your search and remember, if you have any questions, feel free to contact Cheryl Coatney at studentaffairs@cornish.edu or 206.726.5098.
