Angielina
I am a painter and printmaker. I am obsessed with color and subtle humor.
Inspiration?
I love bold and silly paintings. I love the German expressionist period in regards to their use of dramatic and bold use of color and subject matter. I also like the work of Xenia Hausner. She is a modern day painter who lives in Germany, her use of color is out of this world. I love the oil paintings of Jazzminh Moore who now lives in New York but was a graduate of Cornish.
Influences?
I was always hyper aware of color ever since I was a child I used to tell my mother what color the food tasted like that i was eating. I guess the official word for this is synesthesia (a blending of the senses) I see colors when i listen to music. I guess it was a natural thing to become a painter or a musician with extra arms to help me play music and paint at the same time....
Current Projects?
I am working on a series that addresses a spiritual need for flight and meditation. These are paintings and prints that show different interpretations of cultural meditation and introspection. Very bright and funny despite the serious subject matter.
Hometown/Seattle?
I am a first generation American but my family is from the Czech republic. I have lived in Europe but I have been here in Seattle for 15 years. I think people are pretty funny here in Seattle because they are living in a creative bubble and hardly ever go out to visit museums and galleries in this city let alone around the world. I love Seattle but it is a very young city and for gods sake why is it so hard to get mass transit?
Why Cornish?
Cornish is the most supportive school in regards to each individual artists development. I have a voice that I wanted to develop and Cornish was the most open to me using that unique voice and not becoming a carbon copy of some other artist or my instructors.
Cornish Experience?
I have enjoyed my classes here and found that if I was fully present and inquisitive with my teachers they gave me so much more of themselves and their experiences. This is what made my time at Cornish very rich.
Hobbies?
I love making hats and mexican alterpieces.
5 Year Plan?
Running a program for youth in the arts or working towards global conflict resolution, world peace or at least clean drinking water and health care for all.
All of the above!
No I guess I have never had small goals, small goals make small lives
Any Advice?
I would say to anyone who has been accepted at Cornish that they need to do most of the work to access their teachers. Be curious and ask questions and you will find that every teacher here is an infinite well of useful advice. This school is great but will be even more amazing for you if you are truly engaged in your education.
1) Care about your classes (not just grades
2) Create a voice
3)respect your teachers and let them know you are interested in what they are sharing with you
Creative Process:
Open my eyes and mind to outer stimulus pray, ponder and mix with ambition be open to the voice of the piece of art I am making and voila a new piece of art is born
