Braydie

brady.jpg I have been creating since I was old enough to hold a pencil... or a marker...

Inspiration?
I am currently working on a series of photos and paintings of human body parts. I enjoy tearing apart my canvases and stitching them back together, and I figured that doing that same thing to body parts would be interesting.

I am inspired by myself, my peers, and the world around me. I enjoy playing with colours and textures, and I like things that are shiny.

Influences?
I have been creating since I was old enough to hold a pencil... or a marker... or a crayon... or mashed potatoes, if you consider smearing potatoes an art form...

My parents are both artists, so they immersed me in the arts and encouraged me to pursue my creative impulses.

Current Projects?

I am in the midst of a long-term drawing project to combat racism and sexism in youth culture. I create characters in my head and age them from birth to death in a series of 24 graphite portraits. I have 3 characters to date and another in the works.

Other than that, I draw. A lot. And I take pictures.

Hometown/Seattle?
Originally I came from Montana, but I grew up on Bainbridge Island, and I've been in the city ever since I started college. The difference between Seattle and Bainbridge...? In Seattle, there are places to go that don't require cars and that stay open later than 5 in the evening.

Why Cornish?
Honestly, I needed to get off the Island. I was in a dead-end relationship, had no real goals, no job, and no clue what to do with the rest of my life. Then my dad suggested I pursue a bachelor's degree. I've always loved art, and I've always known that it would be a large part of my life. Cornish appealed to me more than the Art Institute, because it allowed me to explore multiple art forms.

Cornish Experience?
Cornish is a balance of hard work, creative expression, peer influence, and social networking. In the Cornish
environment my artistic ability has grown immensely, and my levels of inspiration and time management have increased as well. At Cornish I have found friends who are both amazing artists, and beautiful people.

Hobbies?
All of my hobbies are quirky; why, aren't yours?

My favorite hobby, however, is the creation of my 'Quote Books'. I follow my friends around, write down the random, silly things they say, and take pictures to go with them. I started my senior year of high school, and I am currently on my fifth quote book.

5 Year Plan?
I'll always be doing art - drawing, painting, photography, video - sometimes for money and sometimes for fun. I may still be in the Seattle area, or I may travel if I have the money. I may enroll in a graduate program, but only if I can decide which medium to pursue.

Any Advice?
The Cornish studio classes are intense, but very rewarding. If art and learning are your priorities, then Cornish is perfect. The instructors actually DO in real life what they teach at school, and all are open to questions, concerns, and constructive criticism.

But if you're not self-motivated, and art doesn't comprise at least 1/2 your life, then Cornish is not the place for you.

Creative Process:
Since most of my subjects are human, I draw from my own experience and the stories and bodies of people around me.

I have no set process, but when inspiration strikes, I try to translate it immediately into an appropriate medium; that way I have some tangible working material and a new source of inspiration.
