Nina Fujikawa
I feel like harry potter going to hogwarts. but instead of an owl i have a mac.
When in your life did you first become involved in your artistic discipline? What influenced you to become involved in the arts?
i can't remember ever not being involved in making art. i'm definitely inspired by more graphic art and artists. i would always look at posters and album covers and i would usually take more interest in the packaging that objects came in than the objects themselves. (eee gads, nerd alert!) this, along with my long history of loathing everything not having to do with art and creativity, my personal experiences, and my desire to not become a secretary made me realize that design would fit me like a lovely cashmere glove. with lots of sequins on it. and perhaps a matching hat.
What are your current projects?
challenging, slightly abstract, tiring, and tons of fun-o-la!
Where are you from? How is Seattle different?
i have the great fortune of coming from a mystical and magical land of california. and before that an even more magical place, hawaii. seattle is different because it freezes over in late october and the sun runs off to australia for a few months. seattle's pretty fun, the people are rad and i always have a good time when i go to a show or whatever, but this town has been a serious detriment to my tan. damn.
Why did you choose to come to Cornish?
what attracted me was its size. i tend to loose focus when i'm around a lot of people. i start to not care about the work at hand, but rather my social agenda. at cornish i feel like i can still focus and listen to the instructors and not be distracted, but still have fun and run around with friends and be loud. seattle was also a draw, far enough from home, but still in the same time zone. its a diverse city, but at the same time has a small-town quality to me and is not totally overwhelming.
What has been your experience here?
pretty rad. i feel like harry potter going to hogwarts. but instead of an owl i have a mac.
What quirky hobbies do you have?
singing frank sinatra at the top of my lungs, something i should probably be arrested for. and i don't know if this constitutes as a hobby, but i have a talent for falling up stairs and seriously injuring myself. cool, eh?
What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
being fabulous.
What would you tell a prospective student about Cornish?
i would tell a prospective design student to come to cornish with an open mind, forget about everything that you thought you knew about design because you're probably wrong, unless you studied it elsewhere. i would tell a prospective theatre student to be prepared because you were the diva at your old school, but at cornish you'll be surrounded by scores of kids just like you. that's some serious diva action. prospective art and performance production students: you guys are crazy and odd and wonderful, sometimes scary, and ultimately a healthy source of creative energy that feeds this school. so please come to cornish. and to those kick ass wanna-be dancers and musicians, personally i think you guys are way too cool so please come to cornish for my sake. and to the whole lot of you: lipgloss, kids, lipgloss.
What is your creative process?
i don't know, it changes with every project i take on. but it always ends with not giving a damn, or at least not a huge damn because there's always tomorrow. i apply what i learn, what works and what doesn't, to the next project. i'm bound to get it right eventually.
