I am a theatre student, so my art comes from my words!
What kind of art do you make? What inspires you?
I am a performing-arts/theatre student, so my art comes from my words! When I act and when I sing it's to illicit a response from my audience. To do this, I not only have to speak the lines, I have to feel and ultimately believe what I'm trying to convey. Personally, I'm inspired by alot of random things. Good conversations, moving music, my favorite movies, and sometimes just being alone and having time to think or play piano.
When in your life did you first become involved in your artistic discipline? What influenced you to become involved in the arts?
I was compelled to become artistic when I realized it was my favorite form of expression. The arts have enabled me to be passionate and true to myself as no other life experience has. I feel uninhibited when I'm singing, acting, painting or writing. It's the greatest escape and the greatest reality all at once.
What are your current projects?
My current projects are: Jumping into my classes (we're about to start our unit on Ibsen's "A Doll's House") practicing for finals, preparing and ordering new sheet music for my vocals class, and in my spare time, writing and jogging around my neigborhood to keep active!
Where are you from? How is Seattle different?
I've been born and raised in Seattle my whole life, but I've never been a native to downtown. It's been great to get to know this area and feel self-sufficient in an urban environment.
Why did you choose to come to Cornish?
I chose to come to Cornish because I wanted to have a college experience that would not try to mold me into a "norm" but would encourage me to pursue what I wanted and give me the skills I would need to master my chosen craft.
What has been your experience here?
My experience here has made me change mentally, physically, and emotionally! I have so much respect for acting and all the time and dedication that goes into it. I have gained so much knowledge and insight since coming to Cornish. The classes aren't easy, but that's what makes them good. I feel like I've done something worthwhile every day.
What quirky hobbies do you have?
What quirky hobbies DON'T I have? Probably my weirdest is my list-making. I collect mechanical penicls, and then make extravagant lists. Someone once asked me if I ever make lists of my lists. I do.
What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
Wow. In 5 years I'll (hopefully) just be graduated! I'd love to take on an internship at a local theatre. Musical theatre is a real passion of mine, and Seattle has a lot of really good theatre resources. Possibly, I'd even do some traveling to New York... I have yet to see a play on Broadway.
What would you tell a prospective student about Cornish?
I would tell a prospective Cornish student to come to this experience prepared to go beyone their expectations of themselves. I would tell them to apply to this school only if they are serious about giving 110% to all they do, letting go of their inhibitions, and having a ball!
What is your creative process?
My creative process is getting amped! I run, I jump, I find my passion and I go for it. After all, what's the point of testing the water when you can dive right in?!
