Matthew Hinshaw
I was born an artist, seriously, born with a pencil in my hand.
What kind of art do you make? What inspires you?
I've divided my art into three arenas (I have too much time to think): Photography, Drawing and Painting. Each of them serve a purpose to me.
Photography I use to show the world around me. Because well, Photography is unique in that it is physical proof that something existed, at that time, in that moment.
Drawing, is for those things that pop out of my head and want to put down on paper (and that isn't a pretty sight), mainly crazy characters and messed up faces.
Painting is for how I see myself, facets of my personality and so on. I don't know which is scarier, the stuff that comes out of my head or the stuff in my head.
Dear lord the things that inspire the art I make. The world in general inspires me, there are so many things and they do it in different ways. I once drew a picture of a guy having his innards pulled out while listening to Al Green (who is a god) So it's very unpredictable. I guess the biggest thing that inspire me are the crazy people I hang out with. They're really freaky.
When in your life did you first become involved in your artistic discipline?
What influenced you to become involved in the arts?
I was born an artist, seriously, born with a pencil in my hand, nearly punctured my mother coming out.
My family in general is very artistic, Mother was an artist, Dad could have been an artist, my Brother should have been an artist, and my sister's a bit of a mutant so she doesn't even think in that direction.
I've been drawing since I was four and so it hasn't really even crossed my mind the possibility of not being an artist in some form or another. Hell even school work came second to finishing a drawing of a new comicbook character I thought up.
What are your current projects?
I have actually just finished a few full detail drawings. I'm currently just trying to find that one school project that I can turn into my major art piece for the year. Hopefully I won't have to resort to using my friend's brains.
Where are you from? How is Seattle different?
I'm from everywhere. Omniscient am I. No I was born in Prescott, lived in St. Louis, then Prescott again, Then Mercer Island (yuppies as far as the eye could see) and now here. So I'm basically a mutt.
Seattle, there are so many friggin people. I mean they're everywhere! And wierd ones, with glasses and hats I CAN"T TAKE IT!
I guess I would describe Seattle as a lot in a little space.
Why did you choose to come to Cornish?
My brother told me to.
Seriously, Thanksgiving dinner, family asked where I was applying and I listed a few others and once I mentioned Cornish he looked at me and said "If you get accepted to Cornish you're going" Now I'm pretty sure none of you know my brother but he's 6'8", trained as a ranger and could kill me just by sitting on me. You say no.
I decided to come here cause I chose to, because this is where I think I could be successful and get the most out of my money (so much money)
What has been your experience here?
Lots of crazy people. Which is good for me cause I ain't the most mentally balanced person in the world. But it's a good place to actually do art cause you are surrounded by creativity in so many forms.
I do notice a different social structure here, mainly seperated by floors. I mean you got the dancers and music people living up there on their hill.
You got the theater and performance production people in the bowls shouting and having a fun time.
The stressed Designers on the 5th and 4th selling there souls and making cash off it.
And then you got the really crazy fine artist people up on the sixth doing god knows what.
Then there's the seventh, I don't know what goes on up there.
But all in all it's fun, I think we should do a bit more melting and see what happens.
What quirky hobbies do you have?
Hobbies, what are these Hobbies. I'm in college, you assign me all this work and you expect me to have a life!
I draw, it's not really a hobbie, but it's the only thing I do in and out of class.
What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
Shouting at children to get off my lawn. I try not to think that far ahead. But if I had my say, I'd have girlfriend or married (whichever comes first), living in a good apartment.
Happy.
Having a job to pay for the bills and art supplies and just making enough art to drown in. Yeah that'll happen. (that was sarcasm)
I'll hopefully have a few shows under my belt and living in seattle. Thats all I can say.
What would you tell a prospective student about Cornish?
RUN YOU FOOL!!!! You don't want to go there, that's where creativity and happiness live, and that has no place in this modern world!
What is your creative process?
Eating monkey brains.
I first draw out the idea, sketch sketch sketch. Finalize it and put it away till I can use it in a painting or something even more interesting. I've got about five sketchbooks now. So there's a lot of crap n them.
Most of what I do is on the spot, so I think I came here to find a process that I like.
