Lindy Kanand
I am so inspired on a daily basis just walking through the halls at Cornish.
What kind of art do you make? What inspires you?
I tend to make art that stems from my extensive imagination. I used to watch Alice in Wonderland every day as a child, and I think it rubbed off onto my artistic style. Even though my art is somewhat whimsical/funky, I enjoy making traditional art as well. You can't be a good designer without having a strong fine arts background.
When in your life did you first become involved in your artistic discipline? What influenced you to become involved in the arts?
I was involved from the start. It became a realization to me that design might be the right thing when I was in high school, I had a lovely teacher who had immense amounts of faith in me, even when I didn't. My father is also an artist, and he was denied the chance to attend art school. I think that inspired me to go as well.
What are your current projects?
I recently finished the website for a local skate shop called Trickwood (www.trickwood.com) and I am in the process of coming up with designs for their girls' clothing line. A few projects here and there. It can be anything from web design, to graphic design, to clothing design.
I am also currently trying to obey the rules in my strict design classes. I'm not good with a ruler.
Where are you from? How is Seattle different?
I am from Kirkland, which is about 15 minutes away from Seattle. I love being able to experience the energy of the city and drive back to my little town across the water at the end of the day.
Why did you choose to come to Cornish?
Cornish teaches designers that they need to know more than just computer skills. I attended a different school the year before this, and that just definitely wasn't the case for them.
I am so inspired on a daily basis just walking through the halls at Cornish, and I love that we are a little community where we can bounce ideas off of each other and get real feedback. Everyone here is talented. Simple, but true.
What has been your experience here?
I feel the love at Cornish. We are a big bunch of happy teddy bears.
What quirky hobbies do you have?
I save the tags off of my clothing if I like the design of them. I have a box full.
What do you see yourself doing in 5 years?
That will be the year after I graduate, so hopefully having a job that gives me my creative freedom. No business cards and letter heads. Well maybe, I mean you have to start somewhere... but ideally, making art for small companies that have an appreciation for good art & design.
What would you tell a prospective student about Cornish?
If you're looking for frat parties, you won't find them here. Be prepared to see the same people every day. It's a good place to find your style, it allows a lot of room for creative growth.
What is your creative process?
I don't really have one. It's always sporadic and if I have an idea I will try to scribble it on whatever I can find. If I need an idea in a crunch, I look at the work of my favorite artists and designers.
