FERPA is a Federal law that facilitates student access to their educational records, and protects the privacy of student education records in cases of 3rd party inquiry. With few exceptions, FERPA requires that schools have written permission from the student before it release any information from a student's education record. FERPA does allow schools to disclose records, without consent, to certain parties and under specific conditions, which include primarily those school officials who have a legitimate educational need to know (such as Department Chair, or Advisor).
Students have the right to file complaints concerning any alleged failures to comply with this Act. See the Registration and Records Office for a copy of the Educational Privacy Statement.
In compliance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act, Cornish College of the Arts has established the following procedures to:
I. Procedure to Inspect Education Records
Students may inspect and review their educational records upon request to the Registrar or the Provost. Students should submit a written request specifically indentifying the records in question. The Registrar will make needed arrangements for access to the records as soon as possible, and in no case more than 45 days from the receipt of the request.
II. Disclosure of Educational Records
Cornish College of the Arts will disclose information to other parties from the student's educational records only with the written consent of the student, with certain exceptions. (The Registration and Records Office can provide a list of these exceptions.)
III. Directory Information
The law does make provision for an institution to release certain information designated as Directory Information without the student's permission. Cornish College of the Arts thus releases the following student information considered to be Directory Information and keeps all other information confidential. Directory Information includes: Name, Phone Number, Photograph, Department and Major, Dates of Attendance, Birth Date, and Degrees and Awards.
Students may request that Directory Information remain confidential at any time by submitting the request in writing to the Registration and Records Office. The request for confidentiality will be kept on file for the current school year, after which time the student will need to renew the request.
Finally, should you have any questions about FERPA and Cornish College of the Art's responsibility for protecting a student's record, please don't hesitate to contact the Registration and Records Office and they will be happy to help you.
