Karena Birk is a Seattle-based teacher and performer. She holds an MFA in Dance from The Ohio State University, and a BA in Classics from the University of Washington. She teaches modern dance and ballet, at schools including at the University of Washington Bothell, Cornish Preparatory Dance Program, Bainbridge Dance Center, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and The Ohio State University. After training at the Cornish Preparatory Dance Program and the Richmond Ballet, she went on to dance professionally with the Colorado Ballet, Lehua Dance Theatre, and ARC Dance, among others. Currently, she performs with Hyphen (formerly Catherine Cabeen and Company) and Redd Legg Dance. She has been privileged to dance works of Trisha Brown, Anna Sokolow, Antony Tudor, George Balanchine, Fanny Elssler, Wade Madsen, Deborah Wolf, Hannah Wiley, and many others. Her MFA studies focused on dance performance, notation, history, and pedagogy, and she holds a Teaching Certification in Labanotation. She has staged a number of historical works from their Labanotation scores, including Doris Humphrey’s The Shakers, and selections from Helen Tamiris’s Negro Spirituals. She is a member of the Congress on Research in Dance, the Society of Dance History Scholars, the International Association for Dance Medicine and Science, and the National Dance Education Organization.
