Matthew Smucker is a Seattle based scenic designer whose work has appeared locally at Seattle Repertory Theatre, ACT, The 5th Avenue Theatre, Intiman Theatre, New Century Theatre Company, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Book-It Repertory Theatre, The Empty Space, The Village Theatre, Tacoma Actors Guild, and Youth Theatre NW; and nationally at Arizona Theatre Company, Portland Center Stage, San Jose Rep, Kansas City Rep, Minneapolis Children’s Theatre Company, and Childsplay Theatre. Matthew was a founding ensemble member of Deus X Machina, and a long time company member and resident designer with Annex Theatre. Matthew received the 2011 Gregory Award for Outstanding Scenic Design for work including All My Sons, Three Tall Women, and Jesus Christ Superstar, and was honored with Seattle Times Footlight Awards for Best Scenic Design for Nora and The Gingerbread Man in 2003, and for The Pillowman and Wine in the Wilderness in 2006. Matthew was profiled in Seattle Weekly’s 2004 Best of Seattle issue, and appeared on The Stranger’s 2011 Genius Awards Shortlist. Matthew has taught at Cornish College for the Arts, Seattle University, and the University of Washington, and received his MFA in scenic design from the UW School of Drama. Matthew is a member of USA local 827.
