In the summertime, Cornish students may be employed as baristas, bartenders, landscapers, and retail clerks to support their artistic pursuits. Some lucky students land professional internships. Composer and classical piano student Josh Thorsen is earning his bread and butter this summer by writing about the Frye Art Museum for Examiner.com.
According to the website, “Examiner.com is the inside source for everything local. We are powered by Examiners, the largest pool of knowledgeable and passionate contributors in the world. Examiners provide unique and original content to enhance life in your local city wherever that may be.” Thorsen applied for the position by submitting an article he’d written about the Degenerate Art Ensemble for his Integrated Studies class at Cornish. Says Thorsen, “This is web-based freelance work at my own pace, and I’ll get paid—probably not a whole lot—based on site traffic and ad revenue and similar web-related things for my articles. But, hey! it’s something, and a something that I’ll definitely enjoy doing, staying true to my mission.”
Thorsen’s interest in the Frye was initially sparked by an Integrated Studies field trip to the museum, and he followed up on that by interviewing Joshua Kohl of the Degenerate Art Ensemble, whose multi-disciplinary work is now on display at the Frye.
