Robert Battle Visiting Artist Residency

Nationally-recognized choreographer Robert Battle will conduct a visiting artist residency in the Cornish College of the Arts Dance Department in October 2009. Assisted by a company dancer, Battle will stage Rush Hour and teach master classes to the department students.

A former member of the Parsons Dance Company, Robert Battle founded Battleworks Dance Company in 2001. Battleworks has performed extensively in New York City and across the country at such venues as The Joyce Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, American Dance Festival, and Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. In addition to creating dances for Battleworks, Robert Battle has been commissioned to create works for the Hubbard Street Repertory Ensemble, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ailey II, River North Dance Company, Koresh Dance Company, Introdans, and PARADIGM.

Battle regularly conducts residencies at universities throughout the country and teaches master classes in NYC and abroad.  In 2005, he was honored at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as a “Master of African-American Choreography”.

Rush Hour was premiered by the Parsons Dance Company in 1998. With original music by John Mackey, the dance captures the rhythms and intensity of urban life.

Funding for the Robert Battle residency has been provided by the Bossak/Heilbron Charitable Foundation.
