March Cornish Presents Brings Grammy Nominee Marie And Northwest Originals Lim+Watras+Vu+Poor

Daring singer, actress, and performer René Marie appears March 24 at PONCHO Concert Hall in Seattle as part of the Cornish Presents series. Marie will sing works from her 2015 Grammy nominated album, I Wanna Be Evil (With Love to Eartha Kitt). Joining her  on stage will be members of Cornish College of the Arts music faculty (and alumna) Dawn Clement (piano), Elias Baily (bass),  and Quentin Baxter (drums). Marie’s vocal style tips the hat to Kitt and her fiery, sensual and clever interpretations of songs. With her own incredible range of vocal ability, her powerful emotional resonance, and strong independent streak, Marie’s I Wanna Be  Evil (With Love to Eartha Kitt) incorporates a distinctly American mélange of jazz, soul, blues, folk and gospel.

On March 29, 7 pm, the accomplished classical music duo of Michael Jinsoo Lim (violin) and Melia Watras (viola) teams up with jazz musicians Cuong Vu (trumpet) and Ted Poor (drums) for a Cornish Presents concert at PONCHO Concert Hall. Lim and Watras start the evening with compositions for violin and viola and will be joined during the second half by Vu and Poor for a set of improvised music. This collaboration between faculty from Cornish (Lim) and the University of Washington (Watras, Vu, and Poor) features new cross genre work and promises to appeal to both jazz lovers and classical music fans.

March master classes include jazz pianist Hal Galper (March 3, 12 pm), Los Angeles based jazz vocalist Sara Gazarek (March 20, 12 pm), and Marie (March 24, 12 pm).  All Cornish Presents Master Classes are free and open to the public.
