About the performers:

MATT WILSON QUARTET
In recent years, drummer Matt Wilson has blazed a trail of exciting projects and a long list of accolades, including “Best New Artist” by the New York Jazz Critics Circle, four consecutive titles as DownBeat critics’ “rising star” drummer, and a winning vote in a Modern Drummer Magazine reader’s poll. For this performance, the esteemed Artist-in-Residence will be joined by his quartet featuring Andrew D’Angelo, alto saxophone and bass clarinet; Jeff Lederer, tenor and soprano saxophone; and Chris Lightcap, bass.

TRIO M
Trio M, featuring Berkeley-based pianist Myra Melford (Music ‘80-‘81) with drummer Matt Wilson and bassist Mark Dresser, brings together three visionary jazz artists with their own extensive track records with other adventurous ensembles. This volatile ensemble explores compositions contributed by every member while maintaining a commitment to spontaneous improvisation. Unbound by piano trio conventions, the leaderless project erases distinctions between frontline and accompanist, requiring each player to shape the music’s flow as it unfolds. The resulting sounds can be fierce and beatific, playful and rigorous, earthy or abstract, extravagantly joyous or quietly introspective. The only constant is the triumvirate’s wondrous capacity to listen deeply and respond to one another other in unexpected ways, creating state of the art jazz that’s unbound by notions of genre, form, or conventional technique. BE BREAD
A sonic explorer whose career has been defined by a restless curiosity and openness to collaborative creativity, improvising pianist and composer Myra Melford (Music ‘80-‘81) “is at once a dancer, a romantic and a savage suckerpuncher at the bench…beating all hell out of the piano and making it beautiful.” (Coda Magazine) Melford concludes her week-long residency at Cornish with a performance by her sextet, Be Bread, featuring Brandon Ross, guitar; Stomu Takeishi, bass;, Ben Goldberg, clarinet; and Cuong Vu, trumpet.

THE JIM KNAPP ORCHESTRA
Cornish resident ensemble, The Jim Knapp Orchestra (JKO) celebrates the release of their new CD on Origin records with a special Halloween performance. A 14-piece jazz ensemble that has achieved a unique and original sound through the compositions and arrangements of Jim Knapp (Faculty, Music Department), JKO features many of the finest jazz soloists in the Northwest. EAST/WEST DOUBLE TRIO
East meets west when multi-instrumentalist Jay Thomas leads this group of all-star players from Tokyo and Seattle. The East/West Jazz Alliance aka the East West Double Trio is a group of musicians bent on creating fresh new jazz for the 21st century and a fresh connection between Japan and the U.S. Jazz is the common point of reference that takes on a spiritual dimension when the members of this group work in tandem with the goal of creating spontaneous music of the moment. The ability to communicate using the universal language of jazz far outstrips any inability to converse in Japanese or English.

TRIO 3
Comprising Andrew Cyrille on drums, Reggie Workman on bass, and Oliver Lake on saxophones, the members of Trio 3 have individually performed with such giants of modern music as John Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Art Blakey, the World Saxophone Quartet, and Lou Reed. Together the band navigates from collective improvisation to structured composition (including works by such under-exposed masters John Carter and Bobby Bradford), all with the utmost sympathy and understanding of the moment. As critic Garry Giddins has noted, “the Trio 3 experience involves the assimilation of every kind of jazz, from pre-bop mainstream to the furthest reaches of the avant-garde to sundry precincts on the world music front.” The trio’s unique personalities and musical perspectives form an ensemble where the spirit of the music is the only leader. For more information, please visit http://www.cornish.edu/music_series_09
