Cornish Junior Dance Company’s 2011 Production of “The Nutcracker”
November 30, 2011
Cornish Junior Dance Company and students in the Preparatory Dance Program at Cornish College of the Arts present The Nutcracker. Students from age 6 to 18 bring this classic story to the stage with heart and a bit of humor. The choreographers have successfully kept the Nutcracker story alive and given the students the opportunity to participate in a classical ballet with competence while honoring their particular talents. Steve Casteel, former soloist with Houston Ballet and Cornish College of the Arts adjunct faculty member, has brought his expertise both as a choreographer and coach to the production, beautifully restaging and rehearsing sections of Act II and the Party Scene. Christine Juarez, Preparatory Dance Program faculty member and Cornish Summer Program Director again brings her talents of working with younger performers to the stage. Her staging of the Party Scene, Battle Scene and Mother Ginger are creative, charming and the audience will enjoy an occasional bit of humor. Paula Peters, former Spectrum dancer, Cornish College of the Arts graduate, and a University of Washington MFA graduate student has created wonderful new choreography for the Chinese and Arabian divertissements’, bringing a more modern flavor to Act II, The Magic Kingdom.
