Cornish College of the Arts Presents Fall Music Series

Seattle, WA – This year Cornish Music Series features a season of dynamic performances.  Featured events include noted pianist Stephen Drury, flutist Paul Taub and the Cornish Opera Theater’s rare production of La Liberazione di Ruggiero dall’Isola d’Alcina.

All performances are at PONCHO Concert Hall, 710 East Roy Street.

Stephen Drury
September 24, 8 pm
Noted pianist Stephen Drury in a solo program entitled American Musical Genius featuring masterworks from the 20th Century repertoire including Charles Ives’ Piano Sonata No. 2, Carl Ruggles’ Evocations and John Cage’s Etudes Australes.
$20 general admission; $15 seniors; $10 students and Cornish alumni

Ryan Francesconi, Masterclass
September 30, 12 pm
Portland-based guitarist and arranger Ryan Francesconi has caught the attention of guitar aficionados with his genre-bending approach to the instrument and his work with singer and harpist Joanna Newsom.
Free and open to the public.

Cyndia Sieden and Judith Cohen
October 1, 8 pm
Acclaimed coloratura soprano Cyndia Sieden and pianist Judith Cohen present a recital of both classic and contemporary works.

Jon Jang, Masterclass
October 12, 1 pm
San Francisco-based composer and pianist Jon Jang presents “Traditions in Transformation: modernizing Chinese folk music into western music.”

Ken Ueno, Masterclass
October 19, 1 pm
California-based composer Ken Ueno presents selections and speaks about his works for extended vocals and rock band (Midday Veil).

Shunzo Ohno, Masterclass
October 24, 12 pm
A veteran of both Art Blakey’s and Gil Evans’ bands, trumpeter Shunzo Ohno shares his talent and perspective at this noontime masterclass/clinic.

Boom Tic Boom, Masterclass
October 27, 12 pm
Drummer Allison Miller, violinist Jenny Scheinman, pianist Myra Melford, and bassist Todd Sickafoose are Boom Tic Boom. Join us to hear this explosive quartet preview their evening concert and share their insights on music making.

Jay Clayton & Scrape

A birthday party so big (70) it takes two nights to celebrate! Join us as jazz vocalist Jay Clayton performs with the innovative 16-piece string orchestra Scrape, co-led by Jim Knapp and Eyvind Kang.

A rare chance to hear this seldom performed 17th Century Italian baroque opera by Francesca Caccini (1625). Noted choreographer Anna Mansbridge directs. Stephen Stubbs leads the period instrument ensemble and a cast featuring tenor Ross Hauck and Cornish undergraduate and Artist Diploma students.
