Music Faculty Jovino Santos Neto Nominated for Grammy

Jovino Santos Neto

Cornish Music Faculty Jovino Santos Neto has been nominated for a 2009 Latin Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Album. Jovino was nominated for his work with pianist Weber Iago on the album Live at Caramoor, featuring recordings from a 2007 performance at the Caramoor Jazz Festival in Katonah, New York.

This is Jovino’s third Grammy recognized album, with previous nominations for Best Jazz Album in 2004 and 2006. Other nominees for this year’s Latin Grammy Award in the Instrumental category include Carlos Franzetti and Eddie Gomez, Mauro Senise, Omar Sosa, and Bernie Williams.

Jovino has studied the piano since the age of 12, and also has experience with a variety of other instruments, including the flute and melodica. During the course of his career he has been awarded a number of grants from organizations in Brazil and the United States, and received the Golden Ear Award in 2004 for Best Jazz Instrumentalist of the Pacific Northwest. Jovino has been teaching piano, composition and jazz ensemble at Cornish since moving to the United States in 1993, while continuing to perform around the world, lecture and provide workshops on Brazilian music. Jovino also continues to collaborate with his longtime mentor, Brazilian master Hermeto Pascoal, with whom he first toured with in 1977.
