Jim Knapp Orchestra Performs with Ingrid Jensen and Jon Wikan

Celebrate Jim Knapp and his orchestra with artists-in-residence trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and drummer Jon Wikan for a residency that includes master classes with Cornish students and three very special public events happening March 1-2. When this group last assembled at the Seattle Drum School in the summer of 2006, Paul de Barros, the Seattle Times jazz critic called the performance “the surprise jewel of the summer” and later named this performance in his 2006 Top 10 Local Concerts list. De Barros also named Ingrid Jensen’s At Sea (ArtistShare) in his 2006 Top 10 Jazz Albums of the year list. Having Knapp, Jensen and Wikan together again is sure to delight Seattle audiences.

Cornish professor Jim Knapp is a trumpet player and composer and he leads the Jim Knapp Orchestra, which plays his music exclusively. The Jim Knapp Orchestra has recorded On Going Home for Seabreeze, Things For Now for A-Records and Secular Breathing for Origin. Knapp developed the Jazz Program at Cornish College in the late 70’s with a distinguished faculty that included Jay Clayton, Chuck Deardorf, Denney Goodhew, Jerry Granelli, Carter Jefferson, Art Lande, Joni Metcalf, Gary Peacock, Dave Peterson, Julian Priester, Michael Spiro, and Jim Wilke and he continues to teach at Cornish to this day.

Trumpeter Ingrid Jensen can be heard with the Maria Schneider Orchestra, a number of other New York-based bands, as well as with her own groups. Her performances as a leader and as a featured soloist have taken her around the world from Canada to Japan, Australia, South America, the Caribbean and to almost every country in Europe and Scandinavia. She has released three CD’s for the ENJA label (which won her nominations from the Canadian Juno Awards, including an award in 1995 for Vernal Fields) and is due to release her new album, flurry in February with the band, Nordic Connect.

Ingrid Jensen is married to drummer, Jon Wikan who is also an accomplished artist. Currently based in New York, Jon Wikan is a jazz drummer rapidly garnering praise on the international music scene. He has accompanied a cross-section of leaders, ranging from singers Ernestine Anderson, Mark Murphy and Freddy Cole to established horn players such as Bud Shank, Pete Cristlieb and of wife Ingrid Jensen. Wikan immersed himself in the Seattle jazz scene in the mid 1990s where he worked with Jay Thomas, Bill Ramsay, and Cornish professor, Jim Knapp.  During this period he became one of the busiest sidemen in the northwest area backing international artists including Pat Labarbra, Herb Ellis, John Fedchock, Rick Margitza, Buddy Collette, Roswell Rudd, Mark Murphy, Kurt Elling, Bobby Shew, Brad Turner, Jessica Williams and Dan Faehnle.
