Intimate Apparel

Set at the end of America’s Industrial Revolution, at the beginning of the 20th century, Intimate Apparel is a tale of hope, sacrifice, and strength.  The story revolves around Esther, a 35-year old unmarried black woman, who possesses a remarkable talent for designing and fashioning intimate apparel for women.

Esther’s elegant creations are sought after by a wide variety of clientele, ranging from brazen Tenderloin prostitutes to the proper socialites of Manhattan’s Upper East Side. However, the dynamic characters featured in Intimate Apparel are each marginalized by society in their own way, due to their race and sex, and are faced with strict limitations on their individual ability to achieve their true potential.

Winner of the 2004 New York Drama Critics Circle and Outer Critics Circle Awards, this moving story of hope, sacrifice, and one woman’s strength, evokes a surprising relevance to contemporary society.  Despite its 1905 setting, Intimate Apparel continues as one of the U.S. most produced works.

The October production of Intimate Apparel is produced by the Cornish Theater Department in collaboration with the Performance Production Department.
