Dedication of New Sculpture Honoring Merce Cunningham

Dedication of New Sculpture Honoring Merce Cunningham

Cornish College of the Arts, members of Merce Cunningham’s family and artist Steve Jensen dedicated “Merce,” a new sculpture on the Cornish campus on Tuesday, October 25.

The sculpture, by Cornish alumnus and noted artist Steve Jensen, honors the life and work of dancer, choreographer and Cornish alumnus Merce Cunningham. The sculpture was commissioned by the Cunningham family as a gift to Cornish College of the Arts. It is located at the intersection of Denny Way, Boren Avenue and Lenora Street.

Members of the Cunningham family were joined by the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in the dedication. The Company is in Seattle for performances of the “Legacy Tour” at the Paramount Theatre on Oct. 27 and 29. Tickets for the “Legacy Tour” are available at http://www.stgpresents.org.

“We are thrilled to share this lasting memorial to Merce with the students, faculty, staff and alumni of Cornish College of the Arts and with the general public who will enjoy it over the years,” said Jody Cunningham, who is also a member of the Cornish Board of Trustees. “Steve captured his spirit and vision in this wonderful sculpture.”

Steve Jensen said, “My hope is that this sculpture will encourage Cornish students to pursue their dreams and that Merce will dance for eternity where he got his start, Cornish College of the Arts.”
