The Music Department welcomes composer Frank Oteri for a week-long artist residency this February. Oteri has been hailed as a crusader for new music and is well known for his work as the founding editor of NewMusicBox, a web-based advocacy magazine run by the American Music Center (AMC).
In conjunction with the residency, Oteri will be featured as part of the Cornish Music Series on February 24, presenting two of his compositions - one for three electric guitars, electric bass and drum kit; and another, seven songs based on the poetry of Margaret Atwood for two flutes, cello, toy piano, and acoustic guitar. Exploring the future of concert music and cross-over compositions, Oteri’s performance will highlight new compositions by Cornish alumni Eyvind Kang, Gretta Harley and Zachary Watkins, and feature performances by guest harpsichordist Trudy Chan; the Seattle Chamber Players; Cornish faculty members Roger Nelson, Kathryn Weld, Michael LeFevre, Paige Stockley Lerner, Paul Taub; and Cornish alumna Adrienne Varner.
In addition to his work with AMC, Oteri has written for publications such as BBC Music, Chamber Music, Ear Magazine, Stagebill/Playbill, Symphony, and Time Out New York. He has been a frequent radio and pre-concert speaker, and has served as the host for ASCAP’s Thru The Walls showcase, Meet The Composer’s The Works in Minneapolis, and the 21st Century Schizoid Music series at the Cornelia Street Cafe. His own musical compositions have been programmed in venues ranging from Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art and the Theatre Royal in Bath, England to the Knitting Factory, the Sidewalk Cafe and the Bethlehem Musikfest.
