Birds & Whistles On Sale

Birds and Whistles was created by Cornish art student Kyle Wendt in 2000.  He solicited the submissions, letter-press printed the cover and hand-sewed the binding.  With the assistance of a few students, Wendt kept the publication going each year until he graduated in 2003.  After this time, Cornish design students Diana Riesenberger and Adrienne Smitke picked it up until they graduated in 2005.

This year, Birds & Whistles was a year-long pilot class taught by Kim MacKay and Emilie Burnham. MacKay’s fall semester creative writing class gathered the submissions and Burnham’s spring semester class took it from there. Students were involved in the design and production, fundraising, layout structure, typographic systems, printing procedures including paper selection, color application and printing methods, music sequencing; CD label design and bindery.  The final piece is a limited edition, full-color collectible book that includes an original silk-screened cover and also includes an enhanced CD featuring music and interactive work by Cornish students and the cost is just $10.
