Video!! Mary Lambert on “Ellen”
See it now on video, Cornish grad Mary Lambert (MU ‘11) appearing on “Ellen” singling “Same Love” with Seattle native Macklemore: “Showstopping Performance”
Macklemore, the up-and-coming hip-hop/rap emcee, wanted to confront the vote on his home state’s gay marriage proposition, 74. A native of Seattle, Macklemore felt strongly that gay men and women should be free to marry so he penned a tune ““Same Love,” to back his conviction. In the song, Macklemore confesses his childhood curiosity about being gay, talks about coming to understand the discrimination gay men and women face and confronts the hip-hop scene on its biases. Once the project was gaining momentum, he and producer Ryan Lewis were determined to add impact by finding a collaborator from the gay community to work with. They found Cornish alum Mary Lambert.
Mary has been making a name for herself as a singer in the area, putting out her first album just this past August, letters don’t talk. Once paired with Macklemore on “Same Love,” she added a sweet, fluid relief to his driving, heart-felt poetry.
Lewis and Macklemore released the song on the web via YouTube, and it was an instant hit. Now it’s time for some national television exposure. We can all see Macklemore and Mary Lambert perform “Same Love” Tuesday on “Ellen.” The show airs at 3pm on the NBC network.
