Director Timothy McCuen Piggee calls The Secret Garden a story of renewal and reunion; the EXPO featured musical is set to open on April 9.

The Secret Garden is set to open April 9 on the Main Stage of the Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center. The winner of multiple Tony Awards for its successful run on Broadway, the expansive, magical musical will be Cornish’s largest production of the spring and a main feature of the multifaceted EXPO series. This enchanting classic of children’s literature is re-imagined in brilliant musical style by composer Lucy Simon and Marsha Norman, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright of ‘Night Mother. Orphaned in India, Mary Lennox returns to Yorkshire to live with her embittered, reclusive uncle Archibald and his invalid son Colin. The estate’s many wonders include a magic garden which beckons the children with haunting melodies. The Secret Garden is produced by the Cornish Theater and Performance Production departments.

In an interview by production choreographer Dannul Dailey (above), director Piggee calls The Secret Garden a musical that all will enjoy. “It’s a story that, no matter where you are on the timeline of your life, you’ll find a way in.”

“It’s a story that resonates with me on a very personal level,” Piggee continues in the Dailey intervew. “It’s a story of reclamation, redemption, forgiveness. I think the story sits on top of a lot of regret. Out of all of that, it’s a story of renewal and reunion.”

The Secret Garden is one of the many events of EXPO 14, which will encompass not only theater productions, but also dance and music performances. At the center of EXPO 14 is the annual BFA exhibition, where Cornish’s graduating art and design students display their work. The production by the Cornish Theater and Performance Production departments will appear with choreography by Dannul Dailey, dance coaching by Tinka Gutrick Dailey, and music direction by Joshua Zimmerman. The Costumes for the major production were designed by senior Andrea Phillips (PP ‘14), subject of a recent EXPO profile.

The Secret Garden, April 9 - 12, 8:00 p.m., with a 2:00 p.m. matinee on April 12. Presented on the Main Stage of the Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center, 201 Mercer Street, Seattle.

EXPO 14 is a presentation and celebration of student achievement across Art, Design, Music, Theater, Dance, and Performance Production at Cornish College of the Arts.  This expanded schedule of events demonstrates the depth and range of our students’ creative inquiry and expression. EXPO 14’s Art and Design Exhibitions feature the work of Cornish’s graduating seniors, acknowledging their contributions as professional artists and designers. Cornish is proud of their determination, hard work, and appetite for experimentation, as they turn their ambitions from school towards society.  Congratulations to the class of 2014.
