Summer at Cornish is about to get under way, offering pre-college, youth and adult training in dance, theater, music, art and design: registration continues.

Every summer, after the relative calm of the end of the academic year, Cornish comes to life once more. As June 2013 turns into July, more than 400 young artists from a number of disciplines will descend on the campus to take part in Summer at Cornish: dancers, actors, musicians, fine artists and designers. Registration is at a record number, based on previous summer enrollment. Many of these students will join the program from all over the world.

Final registration date for housing and classes is Friday, June 21st and Alison Staplin, Summer and External Programs Manager, reports that Summer at Cornish is still receiving a steady stream of inquiries and registrations daily.

More information.

Several pre-college programs this coming summer are awarding two college credit units upon successful completion.

Summer at Cornish offers students from all over the world a live-in educational experience. Students coming to Cornish this summer hail from Canada, Mexico, Vietnam, Japan, Luxembourg, South Korea and Denmark. Many students dorming with Cornish are coming from top performing arts high schools throughout the nation: Interlochen, Idyllwild, Walnut Hill, Perpich, Booker T. Washington, DASH, Orange County High School of the Arts and the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, to name a few. Over 70 students have been confirmed in the residence to date.

Almost 100 students applied for scholarships for summer 2013. Cornish awarded — and students have accepted — at least 65 of those scholarships for varied amounts based on the programs and departments involved. Staplin notes “We received several generous donations from board members as well as a $10,000 foundational grant from the Ernest Lieblich Foundation that are directly supporting summer scholarships.”

“We have many Cornish faculty teaching in the summer programs,” says Staplin, “as well as an exciting list of working professionals and experts from throughout the nation and locally, including many Cornish alums!”
