Now in her final year at Cornish, Kat Stromberger [PP ’13] displays full range of design talent in Caryl Churchill’s modern classic Cloud 9.
The plays of Caryl Churchill often present designers with a host of problems, certainly her Cloud Nine does. The action alternates between two time/space locales: colonial Africa in the Victorian age and the London of 1979. There is a full cast in each. For a costume designer, such as Kat Stromberger [PP ’13] is for Tim Pigee’s production at Cornish, there is a ton of work but also a chance to really display she can do. A gallery of her renderings on the Cornish facebook page shows no fewer than 20 different designs.
Kat, who grew up in tiny Twisp, Washington, is a senior in Cornish’s Performance Production department. She designs the costumes for Cloud 9, but she doesn’t think of herself as a costume designer per se; the department has allowed her full scope for her design talents, which is a freedom she really appreciates. For example, her last gig was as the set designer for Lanford Wilson’s Fifth of July. She’s already beginning to get work outside of Cornish. She’s been doing some things for the Strawberry Theatre Workshop.
Cloud 9, directed by Timothy McCuen Piggee and produced with the Performance Production Department, plays November 7-10 at 8 pm, and November 10-11 at 2 pm at Raisbeck Performance Hall.
