Yes, that was Cornish’s Mary Lambert (MU ‘11) singing with Madonna at the Grammys; get a closer look this Saturday at the Showbox with alumni-packed Pollens.

The lights are black, the mics silent and the little golden chachkas have all been handed out: the 2014 Grammys are in our collective rear-view mirror. The Cornish community is, however, left with the powerful after-image of Mary Lambert, graduate of the music department and Grammy nominee, on the big stage belting it out with Madonna. The scene was the performance of the Best Song nominee Same Love by Macklemore, Ryan Lewis and Lambert. We’ve all become used to seeing the trio perform the hit song on national TV, but any complacency was swept away by this performance. Madonna, sure, that would have been big enough. But no, the Grammys brought in 28 couples or so of every description — same-sex couples included, of course — to get married in the middle of the tune, ceremony MC’d by none other than Queen Latifa. Madonna was at first wedding accompaniment with a few down-tempo verses of her hit Open Your Heart, but then she went on to join Lambert to finish her part of Same Love.

Lambert, fresh from this extravaganza, is heading right home to perform in Seattle (after pausing to dance at the party thrown by her label, Capitol Records). On Saturday, she can be seen at the Showbox backed up by Lemolo and Pollens. Pollens is packed with alumni. Band members include Hanna Benn (MU ‘09), Jeff Aaron Bryant [MU ‘10], Adam Kozie [MU ‘07], Kelly Wyse [MU ‘03], Whitney Lyman [MU ‘09] and Lena Simon [MU ‘11]. Hanna Benn posted “Pollens and Lemolo will be opening for the luminous Mary Lambert this Saturday. It will be a Cornish College of the Arts Alumni shredding fiasco. I wouldn’t miss it … if I were you … which I’m not … so you decide. See you at the Showbox!”

At the Grammys, Same Love didn’t take the Best Song award, that went to Lorde’s Royals, but the in the sheer size of the performance, it was easy to forget. The album the song is from, The Heist, didn’t get Album of the Year either — that went to Random Access Memories by Daft Punk — but Macklemore and Ryan Lewis hauled little gold phonograph statuettes enough to prop open doors and weigh down papers for a couple of households. The Heist won Best Rap Album and the pair won Best New Artist, and with Thrift Shop, a second hit from the album, they won Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. Josh Rawlings (MU ‘05) played piano on The Heist.
