JInkx in Cornish Alum TV Mash-Up

Is everyone on this TV show a Cornish Alum? Jinkx Monsoon sings from Hedwig with Erin Stewart on New Day Northwest, produced by Kate Huisentruit.

Talk about the stars aligning. Cornish alum and nationally recognized diva Jinkx Monsoon (Jerick Hoeffer [TH’ 10]) went on KING TV’s “New Day Northwest” to promote her star turn in Hedwig and the Angry Inch at the Moore and sang a tune for the studio audience. That would be alum news enough, but the Hedwig costar who joined her on the tune had also gone to Cornish, Erin Stewart [TH ‘03]. But wait — as the infomercials say — there’s more: the producer of New Day Northwest, the person running the show is ALSO a Cornish alum, Kate Huisentruit [TH ’ 01]. The show site notes that the two are singing Sugar Daddy in the clip (embedded below).

Erin and Ms. Monsoon, who plays title role, can be seen in Hedwig and the Angry Inch now through January 27th at the Moore. The show is directed by Ian Bell. “Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of East Berlin-born rock-and-roll goddess Hedwig Schmidt,” the show’s producers say, “a botched sex change, stolen music, and a love affair with an American GI. The music is steeped in the androgynous 1970s glam rock era of David Bowie and influenced by John Lennon and early punk godfathers Lou Reed and Iggy Pop.”

Readers at the Cornish site will remember the recent story of Monsoon’s selection as a cast member on RuPaul’s Drag Race. The hit show is currently presenting its 5th season on Logo TV.

New Day Northwest, seen Monday through Friday on Seattle KING-5 TV, is hosted by Margaret Larson. The show premiered nearly three years ago, in 2010. Kate Huisentruit has been with New Day Northwest since the beginning, but this program was something special, in her view. “Having Jinkx Monsoon on New Day was monumental,” says Huisentruit. “This was the first time we have introduced our audience to drag performance and he was the only person for the job!  I have seen Jerick perform on stage in Spring Awakening and Rent and could not wait to meet him.  I am in awe of his ability to act, but even more in awe of his ‘performance.’”

Kate has seen Jinkx and Erin in Hedwig. “I luckily saw Hedwig twice last week and I’m still reeling from the show. Backed by Erin Stewart, they are truly the perfect match in these roles.  Jerick captured the character with a new depth and played to the audience with ease and candor — I felt safe in the midst of this gut wrenching story and heart-opening performance.  He left nothing in the wigs, um, I mean, ‘wings’!  I cannot wait to see what’s next and to continue to be inspired by this remarkable actor — he is electric!”

Hedwig and the Angry Inch plays through January 27 at the Moore Theatre in Seattle. Directed by Ian Bell, Starring Jerick Hoffer, Book by John Cameron Mitchell, Music & Lyrics by Stephen Trask.
