EXPO Gets Graphic Boost from Alum Hamlet
: Design: Drew Hamlet.
Along with a new name and mission, Cornish Expo, the popular B.F.A. student exhibition busts out an exciting graphic presentation by Drew Hamlet [DE ’10].
With Cornish’s re-branding of its exhibition of B.F.A. work as Expo, a strong new graphic look was called for. After all, the designs for Expo posters and other materials are about design itself, and, of course, about art. The job of representing the terrific graphic and art work of graduating seniors fell to someone who knows the scene very well, Cornish design alum Drew Hamlet (2010).
Hamlet has been on a roll of late. His design for the solo album and CD, Former Lives, for Death Cab for Cutie front man Ben Gibbard was seen in the hands of Jimmy Fallon on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” on October 12, 2012. Gibbard, of course, was there promoting the new album. The story appeared on the Cornish site late last year.
Drew says the process was free-wheeling, with the direction set to “make everything have a feeling of mysteriousness with a little bit of adventure.”
“We played with a lot of themes like the margins between art and design and the idea of pageantry,” says Hamlet. The resulting designs were not closely tied to the college’s brand look, he continues, “but the story and themes all relate, which helps the focus be more on the students and their process than Cornish itself.”
