Perfect for Halloween! Watch Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho as Cornish faculty member Adam Stern guest-conducts the spine-tingling soundtrack.
How often does the chance come around to watch a favorite film while the soundtrack is being played right in front of you by an orchestra? The Seattle Symphony Orchestra will present showings of Alfred Hitchcock’s thriller Psycho at Benaroya Hall on Wednesday, October 30 and Thursday, October 31. Bernard Herrmann’s score will be performed live by the Seattle Symphony, with Cornish faculty member Adam Stern on the podium.
Stern, who was the associate conductor of the Seattle Symphony from 1996-2001 (after having served as assistant conductor from 1992-96), last conducted the orchestra in 2011, when he led performances of the scores to Casablanca and The Wizard of Oz as accompaniments to screenings of the classic films.
“Bernard Herrmann’s music has been a lifelong passion,” says Stern of the Psycho score, “and I am always delighted to conduct his music, whether in concert or as accompaniment to a screening of one of the films he scored. Psycho is, to my mind, simply the greatest score ever written for a film, especially in view of the limitation Herrmann imposed on himself, i.e., writing for a strings-only ensemble. The music is far more variegated, complex and versatile than any other film score that employs every instrument available to a composer.”
Bernard Hermann was a frequent collaborator of Hitchcock’s, providing scores for North by Northwest, The Man Who Knew Too Much and Vertigo. Hermann also composed for the films Citizen Kane, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, Cape Fear, and Taxi Driver. He won an Academy Award for The Devil and Daniel Webster.
Both performances of “Psycho” begin at 7:30 p.m. For tickets and further information, please visit the Seattle Symphony website.
