Current Cornish adjunct faculty member and Cornish alum Eyvind Kang (MU ‘93) was named “Rising Star Jazz Violin” in DownBeat magazine’s 62nd annual critics poll. More than 154 critics participated in the poll, which was published in the magazine’s August issue.
Last year, Kang was the recipient of The Stranger Genius Award along with Jessika Kenney (MU ’07). Following the ceremony, Jen Graves, music critic for The Stranger, wrote “Kang and Kenney gave a performance that will go down in Genius history. It was a Persian song that filled the whole body of the Moore with incantations of breath and sound, and Kang and Kenney performed it unamplified and unlit, wandering along the aisles of the theater. It felt both intimate and otherworldly, probably because this world so often fails to be intimate.”
Kang can be heard on more than 50 albums and has toured with Laurie Anderson and Seattle guitarist Bill Frisell, among others. His recent work includes “Alastor: Book Of Angels Volume 21” (Tzadik) with John Zorn.
