Amy O’Neal (DA ‘99) premieres The Most Innovative, Daring, and Original Piece of Dance/Performance You Will See this Decade at Velocity Dance Center beginning Oct. 12. This solo non-verbal lecture demonstration/dance experience deconstructs her past and recent influences (Hip Hop culture, classicism, Big Boi, Cyndi Lauper, Ciara, Janet Jackson, Dub Step, and the economics of the body) and questions gender and racial stereotypes while using “the ass” as a cultural study of the complexity of identity.
The new work is presented as part of Made in Seattle, Velocity’s program dedicated to growing the Northwest’s creative community by commissioning, producing and presenting evening-length dance works by some of the most talented and experimental artists from our region and collaborative projects between Seattle artists and inter/national leaders in the field.
Velocity also presents AmyO/tinyrage at Soft Power, Activated on Oct. 27 at the Jacob Lawrence Gallery. Amy will offer an interactive field report from her experience performing her Velocity-commissioned solo The Most Innovative. . . and the dynamic conversations on the performance of race, gender and realness that it inspired.
