Life and Legacy of Martha Graham

SusanMcLain_sm.jpgCornish College of the Arts and the Seattle Theatre Group present Day of Dance: the Life and Legacy of Martha Graham, a free lecture-demonstration about American modern dance pioneer Martha Graham. The lecture-demonstration will include an introduction to Graham’s artistic legacy by Susan McLain, former member of the Martha Graham Dance Company. Students of the Cornish College Dance Department will demonstrate the Graham modern dance technique and perform Graham’s masterwork Diversion of Angels.

Art Stops Traffic

Recently, artist trio John Sutton, Ben Beres and Zac Culler created a fascinating new work, “The Island.” Complete with its own artificial palm tree, “The Island” was almost to twenty feet in diameter and floating in Lake Washington just north of the 520 bridge. The three artists, all Cornish College Art Department alumni, were castaways on their own island, appropriately outfitted in tattered suits.Island01.jpg

Alumni Art on View at Fred Hutch

A unique art-on-loan program between Cornish College of the Arts and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center was unveiled this summer. A total of eighty–eight works of art — paintings, prints, drawings, photographs and sculpture — were selected from Cornish’s graduating class of 2005 to be exhibited in the Fred Hutchinson Arnold Building through June 2006.

Julian Priester Honored

JulianPriester.jpgLong-time Cornish faculty member and world-renowned Jazz trombonist Julian Priester was recently honored by the Pacific Northwest Chapter of The Recording Academy. Best known for granting GRAMMY Awards, The Recording Academy (formally known as the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) recognized Julian Priester for “outstanding achievements and contributions that have significantly enriched the music community and our community at-large.”

Brendan Fraser (Theater ‘90) - Behind closed doors at the new downtown campus of Cornish College of the Arts, a large audience of Acting students wait with nervous anticipation for Alumnus and celebrity guest speaker, Brendan Fraser.

Undeniably tall, dark and handsome, Brendan strides in and the classroom grows hushed - then the students break out into warm applause. Brendan’s friendly, relaxed demeanor resonates with energy more akin to a tall puppy than a Hollywood movie star.
