Save the Date! Cornish Celebrates An Evening of the Arts

This year’s event will showcase the 35th anniversary of Cornish’s renowned Jazz Program featuring performances by Cornish faculty, alumni, students and visiting guest artist Ann Hampton Callaway. The proceeds from this event will provide scholarship support for Cornish students - gifted emerging artists in the visual and performing arts. Scholarships enable Cornish to provide increased financial support for our students so they can pursue their education without incurring a crushing financial burden. Cornish Welcomes Kazue Sawai from Japan
Considered the most dynamic and innovative performer on the koto today, Kazue who is on tour from Japan, will offer a special performance on September 29 as part of the Cornish Music Series. Kazue is known for her compelling performances of both traditional and contemporary works on the standard 13-string koto and the 17-string bass koto.
Art Faculty Member Featured in the Microsoft Artist Lecture Series
Cornish Art Department Professor, Ruth Marie Tomlinson, will speak in the Microsoft Artist Lecture Series on Thursday, September 14th. Tomlinson’s work utilizes repetitive processes to exercise her interests in systems, for cataloging and for restructuring. A graduate of Evergreen State College with an MFA from the University of Washington, Tomlinson joined the faculty at Cornish in 2005.
Cornish Recognized in Seattle Weekly’s 2006 Best of Seattle
Cornish College of the Arts received mentions in Seattle Weekly’s 2006 Best of Seattle issue for Best Dance Revival and Best Performance Artists. For Seattle’s Best Dance Revival, the Weekly’s Sandra Kurtz writes, “Cornish Dance Theater’s restaging of Martha Graham’s seminal Diversion of Angels last autumn was all you would hope a revival might be - a flesh-and-blood experience of a dance that otherwise would be consigned to our memories.” Additionally, SuttonBeresCuller are recognized as Seattle’s Best Performance Artists. The Weekly’s Sue Peters writes, “Graduates of Cornish College, these three provocateurs - John Sutton (31, the chief spokesperson), Ben Beres (31, the cuddly one, often found in animal costume), and Zac Culler (29, the serious one) - are the trio most likely to put Seattle on the map for some kind of noble infamy.” Congratulations go to Kitty Daniels and Pat Hon of the Cornish Dance Department and to SuttonBeresCuller for this well-deserved recognition.
A New Way to Express Appreciation
The front lobby of our Main Campus Center at 1000 Lenora Street is taking on a glow this fall with the installation of an etched glass donor wall. Designed by Methodologie, Inc., this permanent tribute to our many donors is creative, dignified and elegant. The use of timeless materials and special lighting blend beautifully with the building’s classic architecture and capture the unique, artistic spirit of Cornish.
