Seattle’s trendy Polite Society boutique on First Avenue approached Cornish with a challenge to create an exciting, unconventional holiday window display for their store. The store boasts fashion-forward clothing and accessories for men and women, as well as antique and modern home furnishings from around the world.
Cornish College of the Arts is delighted to have the Wayne Horvitz Gravitas Quartet on campus for a residency in early February that includes master classes with Cornish students and two public events happening February 1-2. Bringing together four uniquely defined voices of new music, jazz, and improvised composition, the Wayne Horvitz Gravitas Quartet features Ron Miles, trumpet, Sara Schoenbeck, Bassoon, Peggy Lee, cello and Wayne Horvitz, piano. The group’s first CD, Way Out East, was released in the spring of 2006 on the Songlines Label to wide critical acclaim. It was picked Album of the Year 2006 by All About Jazz, listed in Best Music of 2006 by Pop Matters and was on the Top 10 Jazz picks of 2006 by Village Voice. The performances at Cornish College of the Arts will include material from the CD, improvisations, and new works.
Celebrate Jim Knapp and his orchestra with artists-in-residence trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and drummer Jon Wikan for a residency that includes master classes with Cornish students and three very special public events happening March 1-2. When this group last assembled at the Seattle Drum School in the summer of 2006, Paul de Barros, the Seattle Times jazz critic called the performance “the surprise jewel of the summer” and later named this performance in his 2006 Top 10 Local Concerts list. De Barros also named Ingrid Jensen’s At Sea (ArtistShare) in his 2006 Top 10 Jazz Albums of the year list. Having Knapp, Jensen and Wikan together again is sure to delight Seattle audiences.
Cornish College of the Arts recently welcomed John Dimitriou and Roger Bass to the Board of Trustees.
Cornish College of the Arts raised over $310,000.00 for the Cornish Scholarship Fund at its annual event, Cornish Celebrates An Evening of the Arts on Sunday, November 5, 2006. The Cornish Scholarship Fund provides much-needed financial support for emerging artists in the visual and performing arts, allowing students to pursue their education without incurring a crushing financial burden.
